Careers Information

At Cockburn Laurence Calvert Academy all students receive a range of careers information through their form time activities, PSHCE / Citizenship lesson and assemblies.

Careers information may include employer talks in assemblies, employees individual accounts on their career journey, online career searches to find out about different career opportunities to, information on Apprenticeships and information regarding students’ next phase of their education from Colleges and Universities. Many specific careers based events or activities are organised either in school or off site.

The Careers Team

The Careers team is made up of PSHCE / Citizenship teacher, a member of the CSG team, a Guidance, Aspirations and Wellbeing Coordinator, an Independent Careers Adviser. Students can also access the Careers section of the Learning Resources Centre to find resources and undertake online career searches.

Careers Guidance Programe Summary

The careers programme is designed to support all students from Year 7 to Year 11 to develop their aspirations, understand the world of work and make informed decisions about their future.

Our programme is progressive, moving students through Discover → Explore & Choose → Develop → Experience & Plan → Decide & Progress. Students experience employer encounters, workplace experiences, encounters with further and higher education and training providers, and personal careers guidance throughout their time at the academy.

Our current careers provision is mapped against the Gatsby Benchmarks and is reviewed annually.

The impact of the careers programme is demonstrated by:

Regularly complete a careers audit which rates the school offer against the Gatsby benchmarks – a measure of the DfE’s statutory requirements for careers guidance.
Internal destinations measures e.g. ensuring all students apply for at least two post 16 options, have a CV, Record of Achievement and a personal statement.
Analyse Academy Performance published NEET figures.

Experiences of the Workplace

Students have opportunities throughout the careers programme to develop their understanding of the workplace and different career pathways. These include employer encounters, workplace-related activities and opportunities to engage with employers and employees. Our programme is continuing to develop in response to the strengthened expectations for meaningful workplace-related activities and opportunities to develop their understanding of workplaces, encounters with further and higher education and training providers, and personal careers guidance throughout their time at the academy.

Supporting Individual Needs

Careers education and guidance is accessible to all students and is adapted according to individual need. Students with SEND and those who may require additional support receive targeted careers guidance and transition support, alongside the universal careers programme. This may include additional individual guidance, support to explore appropriate post-16 pathways and closer liaison with families and relevant professionals to help students prepare successfully for their next steps.
