Homework, Session 7, and Supporting Your Child's Learning

This site includes information about Homework for all year groups, Session 7 for Key Stage 4 students and additional revision sites that will support your child's learning.

Homework

Homework reinforces learning that has taken place during school time, and develops independence skills. Homework also improves revision habits that are important preparation for examinations and it promotes self-discipline as the responsibility of needing to meet deadlines will impact on school work and beyond.

Our experience tells us that when students regularly complete homework tasks, students are not only helped along the path to becoming independent learners, but achieve greater success and give your child an additional gain to their learning.

We all have our part to play in this and our Home School Agreement states that:
  • Parents/carers will encourage and support your child with extended learning tasks and independent reading at home.
  • Teachers will provide regular opportunities to extend learning beyond the classroom.
  • Students will be independent by completing learning activities and coursework or project work including reading outside of school.

Homework at Cockburn Laurence Calvert Academy follows some simple guidelines:

  • Homework tasks are recorded in student planners and set on specific days.
  • The amount of homework increases steadily as students progress through each Key Stage.
  • Some subjects set online homework that require a computer, tablet or mobile phone in order to complete the task and the school ensures that all students have access to a computer either before school, during break and lunchtimes and after school in order to complete online homework.
  • All students are issued with a Knowledge Organiser that contains key information to homework tasks and revision.
  • In most cases, students will be given a week to complete the homework tasks that have been set. As homework is an important part of the learning process, teachers may set intervention or whole school detentions if homework is not completed to a high standard and on time.

Parents and Carers receive a termly letter detailing the homework expectations for each term, this can be accessed on the Letters Home page.

Session 7

Session 7 is an after school support session that is aimed at a targeted cohort of Key Stage 4 students to enable them to make accelerated progress in a particular area of their course.

Students are invited by letter and a copy of this letter is posted home, as parents and carers have a key role in supporting the progress of their child.

Sessions may be focused on developing students’ knowledge and understanding of subject specific concepts, perfecting externally assessed coursework or they may be focused upon mastering a certain skill.

Each session is carefully personalised by expert practitioners to meet the needs of the invited students, hence they are highly beneficial and students non-attendance will be clearly communicated to parents and carers.

Session 7 is delivered every day of the week.
